Translation

A translation-project consists of many different steps, and the act of translation itself is just one of these. For obtaining a good text, the translator’s language skills are as important as his ways and means of working.

As the German-translator takes an order, he reliably starts working step by step: seeking for information, research, making himself familiar with the field, selecting dictionaries and other resources, followed by the translation process and finally proofreading, revision and refinement. During the whole journey the translator is always a direct contact person for the customer.

In the first step, the translator starts with making himself familiar with the material. Although he already has got some knowledge about the topic, his aim is going to be an expert. He might use different written, but also multimedia sources in his research, or obtain information by interviewing professionals, for example.

During the next step the translator becomes an artist, which means that he uses his language- and cultural skills in combination with his knowledge about the topic and creates a translated text.

This step is demanding and needs perseverance and patience, creativity and often the special gift of filtering the essence of the text.

Last but not least, the translated text needs proofreading and probably correction for the final version. Proofreading is recommended to be done by more than one native language person.

Localization

When we talk about language localization, we talk about ”superior translation”. Language localization means the process of adapting a product to a specific country or region, taking into account especially cultural aspects. Examples for products are websites, games or software.

Transcription

Transcription means to convert speech (either live or recorded) into written or electronic text document. Linguistic transcription takes into account all components of speech like intonation, sound intensity, pauses, etc. Transcription is needed in court hearings, criminal trials, but also for business purpose or in multimedia (film, audio, video).

Interpretation

An interpreter is a person who converts thoughts or expressions from source language into expressions with a comparable meaning of a target language, either simultaneously in "real time" or consecutively, after one party has finished speaking.
Interpretation takes place at conferences, court or police, or public sector for example. Nowadays there is need for interpretation by telephone or online as well.

Proofreading

Proofreading of a translated text assures correct grammar and spelling, as well as a proper style and content. This task should be taken by native language-speakers only. Proofreading requires patience, understanding and accuracy.

Correspondence

Writing of letters – for business purpose or private ones – is an art, in which style as well as formal rules are to be taken into account. All in all, formulations (header, complimentary close,…) are usually linked to language and culture.
